George H. Rohrs, 97, of Hicksville, died Thursday, September 18, 2014 at Community Health Professionals Inpatient Hospice, Defiance, Ohio.
George was born on October 19, 1916 in Hicksville, the son of the late Albert and Emma (Schultz) Rohrs.
He was a 1933 graduate of Hicksville High School. He then attended Bowling Green State University where he received an AB/BS degree. He was in the Commoners fraternity (now Pi Kappa Alpha) and he graduated in 1937. He then went on to the American University in Massachusetts, graduating in 1939 with a degree in Agricultural Economics.
In 1941, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Neiswender and she preceded him in death in 2001.
George served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946, rising to Lieutenant in the Supply Corps.
Returning to Hicksville in 1947, George took over operation and management of the family farms. He retired from farming in 1981, passing operations on to Brian and sons. George was on the Board of Directors at the Hicksville Building & Loan as Director and Chief Appraiser. He retired as Chairman of the Board in 1998 and as Director Emeritus in 2001. He was active in the Trinity United Methodist Church (formerly the EUB Church) for over 80 years. He was Chairman of the Pastor/Parrish Relations Committee and a Sunday school teacher. He was a member of the Hicksville Rotary Club, serving as president in 1967 and administered the Rotary Scholarship Program. He was active on the board of the Hicksville Grain Company and was on the Board of Directors which began the Hicksville Community Memorial Hospital. Overall, George was a gentleman, a scholar, a man deeply committed to his church and his community.
George is survived by a son- Alan (Cynthia) Rohrs; 4 grandchildren- Brian, Bonnie, Bryce and Christopher; 5 great grandchildren- Lucas, Caroline, Nicholas, Kennedy and Michael.
He was preceded in death by a son and daughter in law- G. Brian and Barbara Rohrs.
Funeral services for George will be Tuesday at 10:00 at Smith & Brown Funeral Home, Hicksville with Pastor Jim Spears officiating. Visitation will be Monday from 2:00-5:00 and 6:00-8:00 at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Lost Creek Cemetery, Hicksville.
Memorials may be made to the Rotary Scholarship Fund.
