Obituary

Joseph W. Miller passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones on May 22, 2025 after a brief stay at CHP Homecare and Hospice Center in Defiance, Ohio.  Joe was born May 30, 1934 in Hicksville, Ohio, to the late Carl and Helen (Harter) Miller. He attended Hicksville High School graduating in 1952.  In 1957, Joe married his wife Sylvia "Mikee" S. Sholl and together they shared 55 wonderful years of marriage until her passing in 2012.  Joe served his country with honor from 1956-1962 in the United States Army.

After returning to the area, he farmed with his father-in-law and then worked as a custodian and bus driver for Central Local Schools retiring in 2002.  He was a member of the Hicksville Eagles #2556 and also the Hicksville American Legion Post #223 and was very active in and around his community.  Joe was a founding member of the Hicksville Pony Racing Club, a Mark Twp trustee, served on the Hicksville Community Hospital Board and he served over 40 years for both the Defiance County Senior Fairboard and the Defiance County Associate Deputies, still serving as an honorary associate deputy at the time of his passing.

Joe is survived by his four children, Michael (Jackie) Miller of Peoria, Arizona, Douglas Miller of Woodburn, Indiana, Jolene Gregg of Hicksville, Ohio, and David Miller of Mark Center, Ohio; five grandchildren, Chelsie (Joel) Hardman, Joseph (Madison) Gregg, Heidi Miller, Ethan Miller and Dale Brown; and six great-grandchildren.

Also surviving is his companion of 11 years Judy Brown and brothers James, Donald, and Paul. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl & Helen; his wife Sylvia "Mikee"; son-in-law, Mike Gregg; and six siblings John Miller, Dick Miller, Bob Miller, Frances "Bounce" Miller, Mary Hubert and Madonna "Donna" Schliesser.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, May 28, 2025, from 2:00 – 7:00 P.M. at Oberlin - Turnbull Funeral Home, 706 North Main Street, Hicksville, Ohio, with an Eagles Ritual Service starting at 7:00 P.M.  Funeral services for Joe will take place at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, May 29, 2025, at the funeral home.  Interment will follow in Six Corners Cemetery where Military Honors will be accorded by a combined unit of the Hicksville American Legion Post 223, Sherwood VFW Post 5665 and the Farmer American Legion Post 137.
