Kay E. Baird, 81, of Hicksville, Ohio, passed away Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at Community Health Professionals Inpatient Hospice Center, Defiance, Ohio. Kay was born June 19, 1945, in McComb, Ohio, daughter of the late William Luther and Betty Jane (Aukerman) Weaver. She was a 1963 graduate of Leipsic High School and attended Internation Business College in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Kay married Larry D. Baird on May 2, 1965, at the First Lutheran Church in Leipsic, and they enjoyed 56 years together until his passing on April 30, 2021. Early in their marriage, they settled in Garrett, Indiana. In December 1968, they bought their dream farm in Hicksville, named Contented Acres, where they raised their family, worked and cared for the land. Kay was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Hicksville, where she served on the Free Meal Team, Prayer Chain, Women’s Group and taught Vacation Bible School and Sunday School, and delivered Meals on Wheels. She also visited those who could not attend services. She worked in the office at Jim Schmidt Chevrolet, for 24 years, retiring in 2009. Kay also worked at International Harvester in her younger years. Family was the most important to Kay, and she especially enjoyed attending her children and grandchildren’s sporting events. Kay enjoyed baking, reading in her sunroom, tending to her flower gardens, and watching sporting events, especially football. One of her favorite trips was to Turks and Caicos with her girls.
Surviving are her three daughters, Stacia (Tim) Czartoski of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Krista (Lou) Sterzenbach of Sanger, Texas, and Melissa (Chad) Querry of Fort Wayne, Indiana; one son, Kenny (Tiffanie) Baird of Hicksville, Ohio; 12 grandchildren, Alyssa (Andrew) Poticha, Nick Czartoski, Ryan Sterzenbach, Alex Sterzenbach, Whitney Walker, Nash Querry, Quincy (Matt) Petersen, Evan Querry, Gabrielle Querry, Kyler (Emily) Baird, Aubrie Baird, and McKenna Baird; one great-grandson, Henry Poticha; one sister, Mary Lou Vargo of Toledo, Ohio; one brother, Ted (Shannon) Weaver of Perrysburg, Ohio. Kay was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Larry Baird; and one brother-in-law, Joel Vargo.
Visitation for Kay E. Baird will be held on Monday, July 13, 2026, from 2:00 – 7:00 p.m. at St. John Lutheran Church, 812 East High Street, Hicksville. Visitation will continue Tuesday, July 14, 2026, beginning at 10:00 a.m., followed by her funeral service at 11:00 a.m. in the church with Minister Alex Heffelfinger officiating. Interment will follow in Six Corners Cemetery, Hicksville. Arrangements are under the care of Oberlin-Turnbull Funeral Home, 706 North Main Street, Hicksville, Ohio.
