Mary E. Meckstroth, 98 years, of Bryan, Ohio, died Wednesday, March 3 at Hillside Country Living Bryan, Ohio, where she had been a resident the past four years.Mary was born in Blacklick, Ohio on November 9, 1911 as Mary Edith Kidd, the daughter of Charles R. and Jennie (Farber) Kidd.Mary grew up living on the Blacklick family farm her great-grandfather built after immigrating from Ireland. Mary graduated from Lincoln High School, Gahanna, Ohio, in 1930.During her high school days, Mary was active in basketball, cheerleading, tennis, Glee Club, and on the yearbook staff.She was chosen All-County Basketball Captain and Guard her senior year.Mary earned the title of County Singles Champion in tennis two years in a row.Following high school, Mary attended Ohio University for two years, playing basketball for the university.Mary transferred to Ohio State University and became a member of the Alpha Xi Delta Sorority.She was on the Ohio State University Field Hockey and Equestrian Teams.Mary graduated from Ohio State University in 1936 with a B.S. in Education and a major in Physical Education. After college, Mary was a Physical Education, Health, and Riding instructor at St. Marys of the Springs Academy in Columbus, Ohio for five years.During summers, Mary was a Camp Counselor in New York, Ohio, and Michigan.After meeting on a blind date at Ohio State University, Mary was married to Dr. Paul G. Meckstroth on June 28, 1941 on her family home in Blacklick. After the war in 1945, Mary and her husband settled in Bryan, Ohio where Dr. Meckstroth set up his medical practice.After his retirement in 1981, they resided at the Sugarmill Golfing Community in New Smyrna Beach, FL during the winters.In 1984, Mary was the first female to be inducted into the Gahanna-Lincoln Athletic Hall Of Fame because of her outstanding athletic achievements in high school.During her years in Bryan, Mary was a member of Claire Newcomer Club, First Presbyterian Church, and Orchard Hills Country Club.She enjoyed golfing, bowling, skiing, and playing bridge.Mary was also an active volunteer for the CWU Thrift Shop.She and Paul were married for 59 years before he passed away in 2001.In 2009, Mary was honored by Alpha Xi Delta Sorority for seventy-five years of membership. Surviving her are four children, Don Meckstroth of Meredith, NH, Diane Meckstroth of Denver, CO, John Meckstroth of Crystal River, FL, Jane (Steve) Miller of Bryan, OH; four grandchildren, Scott (Suzy) Meckstroth of Ventura, CA, Amy (Shad) Blakey of Eagle, CO, Ryan and Derek Miller of Bryan, and fourgreat-grandchildren, Larsen and Gresham Meckstroth of Ventura, CA and Ellia and Colter Blakey of Eagle, CO. Preceding her in death were her husband, parents, daughter-in-law, Nancy Meckstroth, two brothers, James Kidd of Lancaster, OH, William Kidd of New Philadelphia, OH, and a sister, Gladys Kidd of Upper Arlington, OH. Funeral services for Mary E. Meckstroth will be held on Saturday, March 6, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 506 Oxford Drive, Bryan, Ohio, with Pastor Barry Sweet officiating.Burial will follow in Fountain Grove Cemetery Bryan, Ohio.Visitation for Mrs. Meckstroth will be held Friday, March 5, 2010 from 2:00-6:00 p.m. in the Oberlin-Turnbull Funeral Home, 206 North Lynn Street, Bryan, Ohio.Friends may also call one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church.
