Obituary

Phyllis Amaden, 88 of Hicksville, passed away Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at Vancrest at Hicksville, where she resided for the past several months. Phyllis was born March 29, 1937, in Hicksville, Ohio, the daughter of the late Mervin and Irene (Volkert) Applegate. She was a 1955 graduate of Hicksville High School, and continued her education at International Business College, where she received her associate's degree in 1957. Phyllis married Richard P. "Bud" Amaden on April 7, 1957, and he preceded her in death on May 19, 2011. Phyllis worked as the bookkeeper and office manager for Jim Schmidt Chevrolet for many years. She was a long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church of Hicksville, where she taught Sunday school, sang in the church choir, played the organ, after her mother retired, served as an Elder and assisted as a secretary. After the Presbyterian church closed, she was a member of Cornerstone Church, and she also played the organ. She served on the Board of Directors for the Huber Opera House and was a member of the Friends of the Library.  She was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star Hicksville Chapter 214. Family was Phyllis' life. She followed her children, grandchildren and even the great-grandchildren at their academic and athletic events. She enjoyed music, playing the organ and watching birds in her yard.

Surviving are her three daughters, Karen (Larry) Coburn of Lady Lake, Florida, Diane (Doug) Taulbee of Jacksonville, Florida and Cheryl (Joe) Larry of Hicksville; 12 grandchildren, Amanda (Brian) Sorgen, John McCain, Briana (Daniel) Owens, Brittany Larry, Petty Officer, Joe (Tabitha) Larry, III, USN,  Courtney Graber, Caitlin (Samuel) Petersen, Deanna (Chris) Thomas, Logan (Karli) Taulbee, Trey (Julia) Taulbee, Collin (Bailie) Taulbee and Taylor Larry; 20 great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Bud; son, Gregory Neal Amaden; twin grandsons, Matthew and Michael Smith and her brother, Lowell Applegate.

Visitation for Phyllis Amaden will be held Friday, June 6, 2025, from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. in the Oberlin-Turnbull Funeral Home, 706 North Main Street, Hicksville. Visitation will continue Saturday, June 7, 2025, beginning at 10:00 a.m. in Cornerstone Church, 232 West Arthur Street, Hicksville, followed by funeral services beginning at 11:00 a.m. in the church with Pastor AJ Swanson officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Home Cemetery, Hicksville.
