Richard Kidwell
Nolen
Dec 30, 1943 — Sep 24, 2026
Toledo
Richard Kidwell Nolen, 82, of Toledo, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 24, 2026, at the University of Toledo Medical Center, surrounded by his family and under the care of Hospice. Richard was born December 30, 1943, in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of the late Manley S. and Lela (Kidwell) Nolen. When he was a child, his family moved to Pittsburgh, where he grew up and graduated from Upper St. Clair High School. He went on to attend Clemson University, earning a Bachelor of Architecture degree.
Richard proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1968 until his honorable discharge in 1972. On May 25, 1968, he married Barbara H. Baines in Pittsburgh. Together, they shared 58 years of marriage, building a life centered around family, travel, and adventure.
Richard was an accomplished architect who took great pride in his work. He spent much of his career with HCR ManorCare and was a member of the American Institute of Architects.
Richard was meticulous in everything he did. He took great care of his body, his health, and his surroundings. Living with Type 1 diabetes throughout his life, he approached the challenges it brought with the same discipline and attention to detail that characterized so much of his life. He never allowed diabetes to keep him from living fully, and his careful attention to his health became simply part of who he was.
Richard also had a deep love of adventure and travel, which he shared with Barbara. Together, they traveled the world on six around-the-world cruises, visiting places they had dreamed of seeing and making memories along the way. He also loved to snow ski and enjoyed skiing at resorts throughout North America. Whether traveling across oceans or heading into the mountains, Richard enjoyed experiencing new places and making the most of life.
Above all, Richard was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He loved his family deeply and was especially proud of his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Barbara, of Toledo; his children, Ricci (Bryan) Jameson of Toledo, Oh, Aaron (Lisanne) Nolen of Austin, Texas; and his grandchildren, Chaz Nolen, Aunika Nolen, and Ainsley Nolen. He is also survived by his brothers, James (Bonnie) Nolen of Rush, New York, and Kenneth (Marilyn) Nolen of San Diego, California.
Richard leaves behind a lifetime of memories and a family who will miss him deeply. He was preceded in death by his parents, Manley S. and Lela Nolen.
In accordance with Richard’s wishes, there will be no visitation or services at this time. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date, giving family and friends an opportunity to gather, share memories, and celebrate Richard’s life.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Oberlin-Turnbull Funeral Home, Bryan, Ohio.
Condolences may be sent to the family, and memories may be shared at www.oberlinturnbull.com.
