Obituary

Susan M. (DeWees) Freed, age 89, a former resident of Bryan, Ohio, passed away peacefully on her birthday August 17, 2026. Susan was born on August 17, 1937, in Bryan, Ohio to the late A.R. and Elsie (Lee) DeWees. She was a 1955 graduate of Mooseheart High School in Aurora, IL. She married William Freed on September 21, 1957, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Bryan, and he preceded her in death on May 12, 2014. She was an Administrative Secretary at ARO Corp. (Ingersoll Rand) for 31 years.

Susan was a longtime member of New Hope Community Church, Bryan Moose Lodge, and the Suburban Golf Course. She volunteered her time at CPC Women’s Health Resource, offering compassion and support to women and families in need. Susan enjoyed golf, bowling, was an avid reader, and loved spending time with family. Above all, she treasured time spent with her grandchildren.

Surviving are two daughters, Kathryn J. (Gary) Schmidt of Colorado Springs, CO, Kara M. (Tom) Girten of Whitehouse, OH; three grandchildren, Cameron Schmidt of Columbus, Kristine Hall of Pemberville, and Sarah Girten of Tampa. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and brother, Robert DeWees.

Visitation for Susan M. Freed will be held on Tuesday, August 25th from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. in the Oberlin-Turnbull Funeral Home, 206 North Lynn Street, Bryan. Funeral services for Susan will be held following visitation at 1:00 p.m. in the funeral home with Pastor David Nicholls officiating. Interment will follow in Shiffler Cemetery, rural Bryan.
